Never Ass/u/me when it comes to Racism
I was talking to someone today, comparing life notes since the last time we saw each other, and I got a life lessons slap in the face on why people should never assume things.
Here’s my bad: I assumed that because this person was married to someone of Arabic decent, and had a business partner that happened to be black, that they must be color/race/religion blind.
Here was their bad: We discovered that we had both lived in the same part of CA at one time. So the question was asked “Did it seem like there had been a lot of changes since you left?”
I started to rack my brain…yes, a lot of place have been torn down/replaced… a lot of construction… new restaurants…etc. While this brain racking was going on, they continued, “It is me, or haven’t a lot of areas gotten ghettoized?” It seems like there are Mexicans everywhere, like someone just opened up the borders and they all came in…”
Okay, maybe this wasn’t racist…but then again,
it’s an odd observation to me…There has always been a large Hispanic population in SoCal. Not Just Mexican, South American countries as well.
But I guess I get a little sensitive about this particular issue, and my Step Mom is of Mexican descent. Her parent migrated (legally) before she was born.
And I always wonder… why do people feel like the only illegal aliens are from Mexico….and that most Mexicans with low paying jobs are illegally in this country.
And if you follow through on that thought, evidently only those of means are allowed to immigrate here.
So much for those huddles masses yearning to be free….
