The George Zimmerman Trial in a Nutshell
The more I watch the news about the Zimmerman trial, the more confused I become. Ironic, because the case comes down to this:
- Trayvon Martin is walking home from a convenience store with Skittles and a soda.
- George Zimmerman sees him, and decided to contact the police
- The police tell him to do nothing, as they are sending officers to investigate.
- Zimmerman disregards what the police have told him, continues to follow Trayvon.
So basically, a teenager is walking down the street, who happens to be black and wearing clothes that teenagers wear (all teens.. black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Pacific Islanders.. did I miss anyone??). George Zimmerman, who has no idea who he is, follows him, calls the cops (evidently as his backup), disregards what the authorities tell him to do and continues to follows him, gun in hand.
Trayvon Martin sees someone following him. What is he supposed to do…if he runs, George will run after him…. if he confronts the man following him, he has no idea this man has a gun. So he doesn’t get to defend himself from a man with a gun?
Lose all the race issues, the cracker reference (because kids never talk smack with their friends) and we have a man following a teenager down the street.
George Zimmerman didn’t know Trayvon called him a cracker to his friend on the phone.
Trayvon didn’t know who this man was following him.
If George Zimmerman had just stayed home, Trayvon would be alive today. Trayvon was walking down the street. He wasn’t mugging an old lady. He wasn’t tagging a fence. He was alone. Walking. With Skittles and a soda.
Any questions?
Here’s a PSA that captures that moment. If it doesn’t give you chills, you need to rethink your humanity…
