BlackLivesMatter does NOT mean I hate Cops
A lot of things I write about are prompted by perusing my Facebook wall. A few days ago, a Deputy in Texas was shot to death, in the back, by someone who is obviously a coward. I have been hoping that when a suspect was apprehended, it would not be a black man. But a short time ago, police arrested a 30-year old black man.
Let the comments on the message boards begin….
We’ve seen it all before…. “All Lives Matter”… “Cops Lives Matter”….
I hate to sound blasé, but DUH… yes All lives DO matter…Cops lives DO matter….
We don’t know the story behind this execution, but if this young man killed this deputy simply because of his uniform, then
he has degraded the meaning behind BlackLivesMatter.
Here’s how…
The reason why the BlackLivesMatter phenomenon has happened, it that for years, the black community has been viewed by some law enforcement (not all) as presumed guilty. The entire community is condemned by the actions of a few. And thanks to smartphones and social media, the world can now see how easy it had been for someone in law enforcement to kill a person of color and get away with it.
And that is why the the shooting of the deputy in Texas would be a degradation of the BlackLivesMatter movement. If you deem all police to be a danger, isn’t that the same as deeming all blacks to be a danger?
Folk, there are good cops and bad cops….. good people of color and not so good….. the minute we decide to toss everyone into one convenient category, we might as well just shut off our brains and switch over to auto-pilot….
Oh wait…. that’s what we ARE doing….
